Budding Musicians

Today we created music and sound effects to go with the story "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" We had fun finding out which instruments would make the best sound for the swishy swashy grass, the squelchy mud and the scary bear. Then this afternoon we worked in groups to create our own sounds and beats. We practised writing these down using 'graphic notation'. Check out the photos of our groups presenting to the class and the graphic notations they created.

Room 11's Flag Designs

For homework this week we designed a flag for New Zealand. This morning in class we talked about our reasons for our flag designs. We all voted for the designs we liked and ended up with three favourites. Here they are and the reasons they were designed or chosen.
I chose this flag because I like the design with the stars on it and the flag on it. From lochlan cockerell.
I chose a flag design that is called kore hearts. It has a river at the top. By Poppy
Frank's design has a long white cloud, blue because we are surrounded by ocean and some features of the old flag.

Wow Week Projects

Today we started our Wow Week project.  Moana Syndicate has the challenge to design some playground equipment out of tyres.  We looked at the space we have been allocated - the garden beside the library.  Then we searched for some ideas online.  We found a great pinterest page that had lots of different ideas.  After we talked about these we drew some designs and shared them in groups and as a 'walk and gawk'.  The class came up with some fantastic ideas and I can't wait to see what they choose to do.

All the groups were very good at sharing their ideas.  We focused on explaining what our designs meant and being a good listener.

This group decided to do their sharing out by the garden so they could imagine what it might look like.

We did a 'Walk and Gawk'.  Silently looking at everyone's work and thinking about ideas we liked or found interesting.

                                                             Frank shared his designs.

The ideas about creating a creature that we could climb through and on top of was popular.  The class also really liked the teeth.

Louie told us about his ideas.

Poppy had lots of different ideas to share.

The class liked these too and wondered how we could hold the giant flower up.

Natalia had some very thoughtful ideas.

The class were interested in the idea that this design went around in a loop.

What wonderful work today.  Did you notice all the Room 11 students showing excellent listening manners.  They also asked very thoughtful and useful questions.

Touchstone Walk

What a wonderful morning we had out in our local community.  I was so proud of the class and the way the went about their jobs this morning.  Room 11 were in 7 groups that they had selected themselves.  In each group they had children from the different teams they have been working in this week, so they had a stone designer, a map maker, an illustrator, and a story writer.  This was important because each group had been allocated a stone to place.  Each group had prepared a map and highlighted the part of the story that told them where they needed to place their stone.
We had wonderful parent helpers and beautiful weather, we set out to place these stones.
We had to keep checking the story to see where he stones should go.

Our first stone placed outside Nayland Kindy.

The next stone outside Broadgreen Intermediate.

Nayland Pools had the next stone.

 Broadgreen History House

 Samuel's Rose Gardens

We took a moment to smell the roses.

And check out the massive trees.

 The Railway Reserve, Songer Street

We had a morning tea break at the Railway Reserve.

We made it, all the way to Octopus Garden.

We had time for a quick play at the playground.

 Isel Park

 The last stone.

 Lunch in Isel Park

Heading back to school along the Railway Reserve.
